- Lassen Peak/Caribou Wilderness
- Lassen Peak, in northern California, is near the southern end of the volcanic
Cascade Range. During the 20th century, two Cascades volcanoes erupted, Mt.
St. Helens in 1980 and Lassen Peak in 1911. Today, Lassen Peak is the primary
feature of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Adjacent to the park to the east,
in the Lassen National Forest, is the Caribou Wilderness.
- The Caribou is far enough from the peak to be unaffected by the 1911 eruption,
but its terrain is that of recent vulcanism. There are many lakes but few
streams; water flows freely underground. Since streams are primary agents
of erosion, the terrain in the Caribou is gentle. The spectacular vistas are
toward the west. This is a place for introspection.
